About University Elite
University Elite is the brainchild of Dr. Hans Watson, a nationally recognized psychiatrist, author, and speaker. His distinguished background includes serving in the military as an enlisted soldier and an army line officer. Dr. Watson’s expertise spans a wide range of fields, including intellectual disability, rehabilitation programs, marriage therapy, sleep, motivational speaking, leadership coaching, and authoring multiple books. Through his world-class psychiatric care, he helps patients uncover “the why” behind their symptoms. He is also one of the leading voices in Brain Reactivation Therapy (BRT), which focuses on healing by reactivating important brain centers.
University Elite was established by Dr. Watson to extend his expertise and make mental healthcare resources accessible to everyone. The website serves as a bridge between mental healthcare professionals and those seeking their services. It also functions as a learning portal for both parties, offering valuable resources and materials developed by Dr. Watson. Through the website, Dr. Watson offers BRT certification courses to health professionals and a way to enlist their services on the website for the general public. For the general public, the website offers courses on topics like sleep disorders, anxiety, and more, in addition to his books, videos, and podcasts.
Dr. Wason came to us with a vision to create a website that would cater to both regular users/patients and mental health professionals who attend his seminars. The goal was to enable professionals to create their profiles as listings, participate in quizzes, receive BRT certifications, and more. And for the general public to gain access to Dr. Watson’s books, podcasts, videos, courses, etc. to educate themselves.
However, these two experiences were initially separated into two different platforms. This segmentation made data management complex and cumbersome, as there was no synchronization between the two platforms.
This partnership helped unify the entire University Elite setup and reduce the hosting cost and maintenance headache.
How we did it
Merging Two Websites into a Unified Website
The key challenge was to build a common backend for the two websites. The goal was directing each audience group—patients and healthcare professionals—to their respective user journeys without friction in this new website. To achieve this, we designed the homepage with distinct cues for the user's next action. The layout has two sections to choose from - one for general public/patients and the other for mental health professionals. Each section has relevant copy and clear CTAs. Now a user landing on the website selects an appropriate path and is directed to a tailored experience.We opted for a WordPress/WooCommerce combination for the new unified website. This decision was driven by the platform’s user-friendliness and its ability to handle resource-heavy content. The development process began with setting up a robust environment. We installed WordPress with a MySQL database, Apache server, and necessary PHP modules. Additionally, AWS Simple Email Services were configured, and an SSL certificate was implemented to secure data transmission. For version control and smooth collaboration, we integrated GitHub. We then set up all the pages, including home, registration, product listing, and product detail pages. Each page was customized according to the branding guidelines.
Course Setup with Checkout for Public & Professionals
The website offers a wealth of resources, including books, recorded seminars, videos, articles, and podcasts by Dr. Hans Watson. Patients and the general public can purchase access to these seminars directly from the site. For health professionals, Dr. Watson provides specialized courses for BRT certifications. Health professionals can enroll in these certification courses directly on the website and complete the payment process online.To facilitate this, we set up the course management system using LearnDash. The platform was configured to offer a seamless learning experience. We standardized the design to ensure all courses align with the site’s branding and maintain a cohesive look. Each course was organized with comprehensive outlines, images, and other materials, all of which can be easily managed from the backend. We also integrated a Vimeo account to host course videos, seminars, and other multimedia content.
For the general public, we implemented a unique discount system. Individuals can reach out to a mental health professional listed on the portal to obtain an access code. This code, which acts as a discount coupon, can be applied during checkout when purchasing access to a seminar.
Account Setup for Therapist
The University Elite platform also functions as a directory of mental health professionals. Professionals can register to be listed in the directory. Patients can find and contact them based on their location, displayed on a map view.Once registered, professionals are provided with a unique access code. These codes act as discount coupons that their patients can use to purchase access to Dr. Watson’s seminars/courses from the website. The percentage of discount usually varies for different BRT levels.
We created a streamlined registration process for professionals using a custom form built from scratch. Once registered, therapists can log in to their profiles and use this dashboard to preview and update their profiles, access courses, and pursue BRT certification.
